Furniture embracing life

The Chestnut & Oak serving board

Waste not, want not. After crafting the Chestnut and Birch side table, the upper section of the chestnut ‘cookie’ remained. Rather than discarding it, we reimagined it as a characterful chopping board, pairing it with reclaimed Oak salvaged from a dismantled sideboard.

The board proudly retains a visible chainsaw mark—a raw, honest reminder of its woodland origins. This rugged detail, combined with the rich grain of the reclaimed oak, has created a wonderful, tactile piece perfect for serving bread or cheese. It is a small but significant testament to giving every piece of timber a second life.

To achieve its striking black finish, the oak handle has been ebonised — a traditional woodcraft technique that is a far cry from a simple coat of paint. By utilising a natural reaction between the tannins in the oak and an iron solution, we’ve permanently transformed the wood’s colour at a molecular level. This process doesn't mask the timber; instead, it highlights the soul of the grain while ensuring the deep, dark finish will never chip, flake, or peel away.
